Tattooing making its mark in history

AN EXHIBITION looking into the history of tattooing has created quite a buzz since it went on display.

The exhibition Tataow! – Cook, Tahiti and Tattooing is currently on display at the Museum of Hartlepool at Hartlepool's Maritime Experience, in Maritime Avenue, Hartlepool, looking into the history and mystique of tattooing from two perspectives.

The first part of the exhibition, which opened last month, looks at how Captain James Cook and his crew on board HM Bark Endeavour in 1769 discovered, observed and adopted the art of tattooing on their voyages especially during their time in Tahiti.

The second part of the exhibition, Tattoos of the Tees Valley, offers an insight into a range of modern tattoos and their meanings through a display of portrait pictures by photography group Wideyed.

One of the people who has seen the exhibition is tattooist Julie Sidgwick, 44, who has co-owned Mark and Julie's Art For Eternity Tattooists, in York Road, Hartlepool, since 1989.

Julie said: "It has never clicked as to why I wanted to be a tattooist but now that I have seen this I realise why.

"I used to study Captain Cook as a child in primary school and so it is interesting to think that this is maybe where my interest in tattooing started."

"The exhibition is really interesting and I think it is great for people to know that the history behind tattoos in part stems from the North-East."

Another person who was looking around the exhibition was Gavin Woodward, 31, who works at Headland Future, a Hartlepool community group. He said: "I found the exhibition really interesting.

"I have quite a lot of tattoos so it was fascinating to see where it all began."

The free exhibition will run until Sunday, April 11.

The museum is open every day from 10am to 5pm – for more information, call 01429 860077.
