Massive hay fire a mystery - brigade
THE cause of a fire that saw a large amount of hay burn for more than 24 hours is set to remain a mystery.
More than 130-tonnes of hay went up in flames in a field off Hurworth Burn Road, near Trimdon Village, at 9.15pm on Thursday, as reported in the Mail.
Firefighters and police were called to the site as smoke billowed across the road.
Crews from Peterlee, Durham and Wingate since took turns to watch the site after deciding the best course of action was to allow the pile to burn out.
The flames came to an end just after midnight on Saturday.
Firefighters, who originally estimated there was 200-tonnes of hay alight, do not think the fire was started deliberately but carried out routine inspections that proved inconclusive.
A spokesman for Durham Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire was allowed to burn out under supervision and, as routine, the cause of the fire was looked into.
"It is still unknown what caused the fire but it is not thought to be deliberate so we would not expect any further investigations.
"Crews were in attendance throughout the incident, with stations taking turns to be on the site."
