THREE threatened post offices offices in Hartlepool have been axed.
Another three in neighbouring areas will also closed as part of a Post Office cost-cutting exercise.

E-mail mail news

The three town branches are the Raby Estate Post Office, in Chatham Road, Elwick Road Post Office, in Elwick Road and Hart Post Office, in Hart village.

Hutton Henry Post Office, in Front Street, Hutton Henry and two offices in Billingham, the Cowpen Estate, in Cowpen Lane, and Wolviston Court, in Clifton Avenue are also set to close.

Posters will be displayed in the windows of those affected explaining where people can find their nearest Post Office.

There is no route of appeal for those post offices affected, and they are expected to close from the end of June and into early July.

The Post Office said the closures are deemed necessary because the network is losing more than £500,000 a day and losses topped the £200m mark last year.

More than 5,000 people from across Hartlepool signed the Mail's Protect Your Post Office campaign but it wasn't enough to convince Post Office chiefs to change their mind.

Students and pensioners joined forces throughout the six-week public consultation signing petitions and lobbying government ministers.

The final decision to close Post Offices was taken by Adrian Wales, network development manager, and his consultation team.
