Show support in fitting way

SADLY IT is all too common to see in the media yet another young life sacrificed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I would hasten to add I'm against both wars. However, British families are paying the ultimate price of these wars through the death, injury and emotional scarring of their loved ones.

I was initially heartened to hear that Hartlepool was to take part in the first Armed Forces Day, June 27, 2009, an opportunity for the nation/town to show our support for the men and women who make up the armed forces community.

The event was well attended by the British Legion and the Sea Cadets.

Stuart Drummond and our MP were in attendance, as were five councillors.

However, to hold this event in the corner of the Historic Quay car park showed a great disservice to all in the armed forces.

I was ashamed that Hartlepool did not see fit to hold this event in the town centre around the Cenotaph in Victory Square.

I hope next year we show our support for those who serve our country in a more fitting manner.

Geoff Lilley,
Fens Crescent,
Hartlepool.
