I WAS watching the Pride of Britain awards – a ceremony rewarding members of the public for their bravery.
A lad dragging a girl from the path of an oncoming train thoroughly deserved his accolade.

However, if I was him, I would have been gutted to be presented the award by two of the Spice Girls.

I watched TV coverage of the event closely and I noticed there seemed to be more close-ups of famous people than the "heroes" they were rewarding!

Then I had a look at newspaper pictures from the event.

In total there were pictures of about 70 people who attended the event – only six of whom were of the award winners.

And then to top it off, an advert for the TV show with a gurning Simon Cowell quoting: 'Without doubt they're the best awards of the year.

It's not about celebrities...it's about life itself'.

Unfortunately Si, it's become increasingly about the celebrities and not the heroes.

More worryingly, it's a case of supply and demand as this is what the public want.

This – ironically – doesn't fill me with that much pride.
