Leading innovation social enterprise CPI is inviting businesses, academic experts and healthcare providers to use its newly launched 5G testbed in Sedgefield, to find ways to commercialise digital HealthTech innovations.

CPI has partnered with Cellnex UK to launch the new 5G testbed in the North East which will test transformative health and wellness technologies to meet the healthcare needs of the future.

By bringing together hospital trusts, universities and businesses, they can push the boundaries of manufacturing and apply Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to bring HealthTech solutions to patients.

HealthTech head of business strategy Steven Bagshaw explained: “We can help the healthcare industry to move forward, become more efficient and reduce costs by embracing 5G technology and testing new ideas in a 5G environment.

“Advances in healthcare and connectivity can improve the experience of patients, as well as the level of care. For example, it may be a new electronic gadget, which can be scaled-up and tested in a pre-hospital environment, or using digital technology to improve the patient experience by providing connectivity to enable patients to navigate their way through a hospital.

“Our new 5G testbed can translate emerging technologies and lead the way by turning innovative ideas into commercial enterprises. By taking the risk out of investing in them, the 5G testbed will also enable start-ups and businesses to gain finance for new projects.”

Developing next-generation medical devices

With 5G future-proofing, the speed of connectivity and new applications, the potential for developments such as remote surgery may no longer be concepts of the future. Wireless communications, flexible electronics and manufacturing expertise make next-generation medical devices more achievable.

The team of 50 staff working in the facility where the new 5G testbed is based, aim to develop and commercialise at least one project within a 12-month period, to bring new healthcare solutions to market.

Steven added: “At CPI our role is to bring organisations together, help them to overcome industry challenges and carry out technical development work. The testbed infrastructure will bring new partnerships together and help to make novel health technologies a reality.”

CPI is appealing to hospital trusts, digital tech providers, healthcare academics and companies manufacturing new medical devices to join them at the launch and see the new 5G testbed facilities for themselves.
