Youngsters from across the region took to the Matfen Hall fairways in Northumberland last Sunday to compete in the Pro Am tournament, teeing off in teams of three, each accompanied by one of the North's of England's best professionals.

Jack and his teammates, Nicola Haines, 13, of Gosforth, Newcastle, and Callum Hoggart, 15, of Bishop Auckland were led by golfing pro, Simon Edwards.

The proud champs walked away with the prize trophy as well as Professional Golfing Association (PGA) vouchers to stock up on everything a budding Tiger Woods needs.

Local players Alice Jones, 14, from Billingham, and Jonathan Conley, of Seaton Carew, walked away with third prize.

Simon Edwards said: "There was certainly stiff competition out there on the course last weekend. With more than 30 teams of incredibly talented young golfers competing for the cup, my team certainly worked their socks off to reach first place."

The Pro Am tournament, which is now in its seventh year, forms part of Northern Rock's golf festival, The Rock.

Alongside the tournament, more than 250 youngsters aged between five and 16 received free golf lessons with PGA professional golfers, while the Golf Foundation provided Tri Golf sessions for over 40 under 5's throughout the day.

PGA North Region Secretary, Graham Maly added: "The Junior Festival and pro-am is an established part of the event and has become hugely successful over the years."
