BUDDING young gardeners have been dwarfed by the sunflowers they planted at their nursery.

Youngsters at Rift House Nursery planted the seeds before they broke up for summer, and were amazed when they returned to see the plants had shot up to 6ft high.

The three and four-year-olds stared up in astonishment when they returned after their six-week break to see the plants had also flowered.

Carole Carroll, headteacher of the nursery and adjoining primary school in Masefield Road, Hartlepool, has put the success down to a very wet summer.

"When the children came back they were amazed to see the sunflowers, it must have been all this rain that has made them shoot up," she said.

"They planted the seeds before they left but only a couple of months later the plants are dwarfing them.

"They have grown the plants to help them to learn about nature and how things grow and this has definitely had an impact."
