PEDAL power helped raise thousands of pounds for worthy charity causes - and a 16-month-old toddler was determined to get in on the action.
Tom Pailor became the third generation of his family to join in with the Cycle for Life event organised by Hartlepool Rotary Club.

One hundred cyclists took part, with money being raised for the Hartlepool and District Hospice and Hartlepool Rotary Club's own charity.

As well as Tom, dad Andrew, 40, and granddad Tom, 68, also took part in the event which gave cyclists a choice of four routes to tackle.

Andrew planned to ride both the 25-mile route and then help his son round the two-mile toddlers' course. He said: "I am a regular bike rider and this is a great family day."

Organisers were hoping to match last year's total of £11,000 raised.

Registration officer Madge Pailor, 68 - who is married to Tom Pailor senior - said 81 people had signed up in advance to take part in this year's Cycle for Life and interest had been shown from as far afield as Sheffield.

"This is the sixth year in a row we have been doing it and it does involve a lot of work, especially on the day."
