YOUNGSTERS turned an international literature day green by swapping their favourite reads with friends.
Children from Thornley Primary School gave World Book day an eco-friendly theme by exchanging their favourite books with friends.
The Book Swap Day is part of the school's ongoing efforts towards gaining Eco Schools status.
Their bid to achieve the national accreditation is being backed by Durham County Council's Civic Pride team.
Pauline Walker, senior civic pride officer, said: "The children were encouraged to bring their old books into school and swap them with their classmates.
"As well as helping to mark World Book Day, the event is also a brilliant way of promoting our concern for the environment."
